Transmission Flush or Service
When a transmission fluid flush is performed, it is necessary to completely flush out all the automatic transmission fluid, or ATF, from the transmission. Flushing needs a professional flush machine, and is necessary to take it to a professional to get it done.
Having the flush done will remove any impurities from not only the transmission but also the torque converter. This process involves running a safe and specially formulated cleaner through all the transmission lines until the liquid runs clear. Then the machine can fill the cleaned transmission with new transmission fluid.
When a conventional transmission service happens, only about 40% to 50% of the automatic transmission fluid is drained. Some of the fluid stays in the torque converter. Any of the old transmission fluid that stays in the transmission will then mix with newer transmission fluid.
One of the most common causes of transmission failure is because of excess heat that results from a lack of lubrication. This occurs because the fluid is not breaking down properly. It’s recommended to get a full flush to get rid of as many contaminants as possible. The owner’s manual is a good place to check to find out the recommended change interval for a vehicle.
